ICGA Thanks Governor Reynolds for Harvest Weight Proclamation

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds granted Iowa Corn Growers Association’s (ICGA) request and signed a proclamation granting a temporary weight limit exemption for trucks operating on Iowa roads to support the haul of this year’s crop during harvest.    

The proclamation allows vehicles transporting corn, soybeans, hay, straw, silage, stover, fertilizer (dry, liquid, and gas) and manure (dry and liquid) to be overweight (not exceeding 90,000 pounds gross weight) without a permit for the duration of this proclamation.    

“Iowa’s corn growers appreciate Governor Reynolds granting the harvest weight proclamation as farmers prepare for and begin harvest across the state,” said Steve Kuiper, ICGA President and farmer from Knoxville, Iowa. “The proclamation saves farmers time, money and resources by decreasing trips hauling grain to the bin and co-op. The extended weight allocation for a 500-acre Iowa corn farmer would require 13 fewer truckloads, and a 1,000-acre Iowa corn farmer would require 26 fewer truckloads. With high fuel prices, this is a significant cost saving for farmers, and we appreciate the Governor listening to farmers and helping as we head into one of our busiest seasons.” 

The proclamation directs the Iowa Department of Transportation to monitor the operation of the proclamation and ensure the public’s safety by facilitating the movement of the trucks involved. Farmers who are transporting grain are also required to follow their vehicle safety standards for axle weights.  

The proclamation is effective immediately and continues through October 10, 2026.
