February 2021
Let’s hope sub-zero temperatures are done for 2021! As we look forward to spring, here are a few things to consider while you’re staying warm indoors:
Pesticide applicator certification is available online. This is the quickest and easiest way to apply for or renew 2021 private or commercial pesticide license and certification. Click here to access the portal.
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup, previously ending on February 12, has been extended indefinitely as the new administration considers ways to increase enrollment. CRP offers a rental payment that can help increase farm profitability by enrolling poorly producing acres. Click here for more information.
The Soil Health Partnership (SHP) recently released a report evaluating the financial impact of conservation tillage and cover crops. The report identified three key financial impacts:
Conservation tillage reduces operating costs.
Cover crops can be part of a profitable system, especially as experience grows.
Success with conservation practices is optimized with a targeted, stepwise, tailored approach.
Nominations are due May 1st for the Iowa Conservation Farmer of the Year award and can be submitted to your Soil & Water Conservation District. Click here for more information.
Lastly but most importantly, until March 31, when you sign up or renew your Iowa Corn Growers Association membership, you get a free hat to cheer on your favorite team and promote Iowa’s corn farmers. Visit www.iowacorn.org/join to claim your hat!
