Meet Iowa Corn intern Kristen Lowe

Posted on June 24, 2016 at 7:49 AM by Natalie Te Grootenhuis

Hello Iowa Corn!

My name is Kristen Lowe and I will be working hand in hand with the staff in Johnston this summer as the Market Development Intern. I am working towards a well-rounded education in all things Iowa Corn, and hope to get acquainted with the staff, boards, and committees who work tirelessly to represent this entity to the best of their ability.

This internship will allow me to explore my passion for agriculture, cultivate my knowledge, and discover where I belong in this ever-evolving industry. Agriculture, to me, provides a truly abundant life. Not only has it provided a meal each day, or clothes to comfortably wear, but a wonderful past, an ever-challenging present, and a future I look forward to. I am defined by my passion and dedication to finding the best way I can serve this industry.

I grew up in Dysart, Iowa, along with my two younger siblings. I spent my summers detasseling and derouging corn, lifeguarding at the local pool, and participating in the Benton County Fair and Iowa State Fair with my 4-H and FFA projects. The FFA and 4-H programs helped me discover my passion for agriculture and made me determined to find a career in the industry after graduating from Union High School.

I am currently studying Agriculture & Society and Public Relations and minoring in Agronomy at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. I just finished my sophomore year and have loved staying involved in a wide range of activities on campus such as Freshmen Council, the University Honors Program, the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, CALS Connections publication, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Council. This fall I will be taking a semester off of my studies to pursue an internship with the National Pork Producers Council in Washington, D.C. I am so grateful for the amazing internship opportunities I will have with Iowa Corn and the National Pork Producers, and look forward to gaining invaluable skills, networking contacts, and lifelong memories. In the future I see myself working as a public policy professional or public relations specialist in a trade group similar to my internships.

Currently, I live in Ames and enjoy cooking and biking or running in the nice weather. Whenever I have a free weekend, I love traveling back to the acreage to spend time with my family. Once I hit that gravel road, I know I’m close to home.
