There’s strength in numbers when lobbying for state or national issues that are important to the corn industry. The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) is proud of its members who help spread the message and recruit new members to join this grassroots organization. ICGA has hundreds of members who reach out to recruit neighbors, friends and others to and ask them to become members. Many of the top recruiters are rewarded for their efforts to increase membership.
Larry Jons of Central City, who serves on the ICGA committee that oversees membership, has been a top membership recruiter several years at the state with ICGA and the national level with the National Corn Growers Association. He is in the NCGA Membership Recruiter Hall of Fame as well.
“This is a grassroots organization and our members are the foundation,” says Jons. “I enjoy talking to people about our organization and telling them how ICGA is working on issues important to them.”
Jons makes an effort to call people in the evenings telling them about Iowa Corn efforts and asking for memberships.
“I’m proud of the work our organization does and I think that shows when I’m talking to people,” Jons adds.
Whether it’s trade, infrastructure, the farm bill, or environmental issues, corn growers have stood together for sound agricultural policy. In recent years, the corn growers have faced criticism from special interest groups who claim corn growers can’t provide corn for both feed and fuel.
“There are a lot of issues out there that are important to our industry,” adds Jons. “Checkoff dollars cannot be used for lobbying so we need our membership revenue. I enjoy recruiting because it is a great time to talk with other farmers and it gives them the opportunity to get involved.”
