Larry Klever of Audubon started planting corn earlier this week. He finished a field this morning that had good, warm soil conditions. Planting and soil conditions are very good, however rain and cooler temperatures are expected over the next few days. Klever says he’s not enthused about planting corn right before a cold, wet period. He will likely wait before planting any more acres.
Nick Leibold of New Hampton is starting to plant corn. Rain last Thursday and over the weekend has kept the soils damp. He hopes to get some acres planted today before more rain is expected on Friday. There could possibly be a chance of snow or flurries over the weekend in northern Iowa. Leibold isn’t in any hurry to plant prior to the cold conditions that are expected. The majority of farmers in his area started planting this week as well. He says the extended forecast (10 days) looks warmer so he’s hoping for long stretch of good weather to get planting done.
