Wayne Humphreys of Columbus Junction in Louisa County started planting last Thursday, April 12. He planted about 40 acres. He used those acres to make sure everything was set correctly including the right planter depth and seed count . He received a really cold rain following that and it has been cold since then. He says there have been a lot of planters running in his area. Humphreys serves on the Iowa Corn Promotion Board.
Greg Eibs of Laurel in Marshall County has not started planting corn yet. Some corn was planted in his area last week but they received three inches of rain over the weekend and no one is back in the fields yet. Eibs says the precipitation was needed and will help with soil moisture levels. He expects planting to start up again once the temperatures rise and the fields dry out. Greg is a director for the Iowa Corn Growers Association.
