IMPROVING THE PRODUCTIVITY OF THE CORN PLANT

The Iowa Corn Promotion Board is investing checkoff funds to increase the efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of corn production. Two key initiatives look to reduce the corn plants need for additionally applied fertilizer and help to identify key corn genetic traits that impact yield and the plant’s ability to respond to environmental stressors.

Phenotyping is conducted to leverage and understand the corn genome information, turning it into functional knowledge for future crop improvement.

ICPB is also developing corn traits to improve the efficient use of fertilizer using biotechnology, to improve the efficiency of corn production as well as provide environmental benefits such as improved water quality.
