The Mitchell County Corn Growers Association partnered with Sukup Manufacturing Co. to help fund a Safe T Home® built at the Mitchell County Fairgrounds yesterday. The Safe T Home® is a new addition to the Little Farm Hands project, an interactive, educational experience related to life on an Iowa farm. Little Farm Hands was created in 2013 by the Mitchell County Corn and Soybean Associations. Last year, over 600 kids toured the barn for a hands-on learning experience about Iowa agriculture. The Safe T Home® expands the display allowing the youngest fairgoers an ongoing educational opportunity.

“With increased interest at the Mitchell County Fair, the Safe T Home® extends the popular Little Farm Hands project for children and adults in our community,” said project coordinator and Mitchell County Corn Board Member, Dean Sponheim.  “We are trying to bridge the gap between agriculture and urban communities with projects like Little Farm Hands, so we greatly appreciate Sukup’s donation of funds for a portion of the Safe T Home® and continuing to invest in educating the public about Iowa agriculture.”

Members of the Mitchell County Corn Growers Association constructed the home in just 6 hours under the leadership of GoServ Global, a non-profit organization based in Eagle Grove, IA that partners with Sukup to distribute the Safe T Homes® around the world. Klapperich Farm Systems of McIntire, Iowa, donated the cement and provided labor for the project. Aside from this display, there are Safe T Homes® in Haiti, Kenya, Peru and Uganda where they are used for orphanages, clinics, schools and family homes. The Sukup Safe T Home® is a highly modified Iowa grain bin outfitted with lockable windows and doors and an interior loft, and the home has 379 square feet of livable space. Thanks to the partnership of the Mitchell County Corn Growers Association and Sukup Manufacturing Co., one will be on display year-round at the Mitchell County Fairgrounds.

Check out Little Farm Hands and the Safe T Home® at the Mitchell County Fair from July 31-August 4, 2019.
