Iowa Corn and Iowa Speedway Pit Crew Coming to a Field Near You

September 8, 2016

WHO:                       Jimmy Small – Iowa Speedway President

Craig Floss – Chief Executive Officer, Iowa Corn Growers Association

WHAT:                    September 12 marks 300 days until the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300. The iconic short track race in central Iowa has become a bucket-list item for fans and a favorite for the drivers who compete in it.

As a part of the yearlong buildup to the 11th running of the Iowa Corn 300®, Iowa Corn and Iowa Speedway representatives will conduct a “Pit Stop” at Smith Fertilizer & Grain in Knoxville.

Just like on Pit Road at Iowa Speedway, the Iowa Corn 300 Pit Crew will spring into action to service one lucky semi-driver hauling corn to the elevator by washing the windows and handing the driver a dozen lunches for the crew back in the field.

Indy cars feature a 2.2-liter, turbocharged, direct injected V-6 engine optimized to run 12,000 RPM and are fueled with E85. Iowa leads the nation in ethanol production, with 47 percent of the corn grown in Iowa going to create nearly 30 percent of all American ethanol. In 2015, Iowa’s ethanol industry supported 40,000 jobs accounting for $4.2 billion of Iowa’s GDP and $2 billion of income for Iowa households.

Fueling vehicles with the highest blend of ethanol when possible also make a big difference in Iowa’s air quality. Consumers with Flex Fuel Vehicles are encouraged to use E85 because of the high ethanol content, which has greater lung health benefits. One in ten vehicles in Iowa can use E85. Visit iowacorn.org for a listing of E15 to E85 stations and flex fuel vehicles.

WHEN:                    Monday, Sept. 12 at 11:00 a.m. CDT

WHERE:                  Smith Fertilizer & Grain

1650 Quebec Street

Knoxville, IA 50138
