CORN: IT’S EVERYTHING CELEBRATION AT THE FAIR

August 16, 2017

MEDIA ALERT

WHAT: Iowa Corn is proud to sponsor Iowa Corn Day at the Iowa State Fair on Friday, August 18 with events and activities happening on the Grand Concourse and throughout the fairgrounds. The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) will sponsor the Day at the Fair with many special activities on top of those fan favorites fair goers love to participate in each year. Click here to watch a video previewing Iowa Corn Day.

This year’s Iowa Corn Day activities will include:

  • Back by popular demand is the Corn: It’s Everything Family-Friendly Scavenger Hunt where fair goers will locate five corn related stations scattered throughout the fairgrounds. At each station, they will take a selfie. Participants who complete all five stations and upload their photos to social media using #CornItsEverything will be eligible to receive a free Iowa Corn t-shirt while supplies last. Scavenger hunt cards will be handed out at the main entrances or they will be available at the Iowa Corn booth on the Grand Concourse.

  • Fair goers will also have the chance to go through the highly-interactive Iowa Corn Mobile Education trailer which will be parked near the Iowa Corn tent on the Grand Course. The 40-foot state-of-the-art mobile display takes visitors on a multi-media journey showing how Iowa Corn farmers conserve their land while growing corn that’s used for food, feed, fuel and the 4,000 other products made from you guessed it, corn. The outside of the trailer depicts a multi-generational farm family looking out over a cornfield. This represents the 96 percent of Iowa farms that are family-owned. 2017 marks the Iowa Corn Growers Association’s 50th anniversary, and you can join our organization at the Iowa Corn trailer.

  • Visitors to the Little Hands on the Farm exhibit, will have the opportunity to receive a signed copy of the My Family’s Corn Farm Book from Presley Hora whose family farm is the subject of this non-fiction children’s book produced by the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation.

Corn: Its Everything...especially throughout the entire State Fair! This includes the corn-based fair food to the corn-fed animals being shown. You will also see during the Fair:

  • Iowa Corn PLA Cups (corn bio based plastic) at Stockman’s.

  • The Iowa Corn logo displayed on dinner tables as a featured sponsor at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Beef Quarters.

  • Iowa Corn farmer-leaders and volunteers at the Agriculture Building and at the ALC Stage interacting with families through educational games and activities.

  • As a sponsor of the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) Scholarship Program being held on Saturday, Aug. 19, Iowa Corn will be helping recognize many talented and deserving Iowa ag youth.

  • Iowa Corn will be doing 50 Acts of Kindness in honor of ICGA’s 50th Anniversary.  If Iowa Corn spots you enjoying corn-based fair food or performing acts of kindness, you may receive $5 to Kum&Go to fill up with ethanol.

  • The 2017 Iowa Governor's Charity Steer Show, hosted by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, was held on Saturday, August 12. The show helped raise $274,000 in funds to help families who use the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. This year, ICGA President Kurt Hora showed “Bunny, the Corn-Fed Steer”. The steer, who was owned by Macey Thomann of Riverside, Iowa, was purchased by the Riverside Casino and Resort for $16,000.
